The Institute is located at Edmond Crescent on a part of what used to be called Medical Compound in Yaba all of which then belonged to the Ministry of Health. It is a very low-lying portion of the area that is plagued by excessive flooding during the rainy seasons. Part of its land was annexed for the construction of the stalled Lagos Metroline Project. Two out-stations were established in New Bussa in 1983 and Maiduguri in 1988 with the taking over of the Public Health Divisions.
